Veteran's Dependents Scholarship

ELIGIBILITY:
Must attend MD postsecondary institution with minimum of six credits per semester. Sons and daughters whose parent was member of the Armed Forces and MD resident who died or was totally and permanently disabled as a direct result of military service after 12/7/41 or declared POW or MIA after 1/1/60 (Vietnam Conflict) and if the child was born prior to or while the parent was a POW or MIA; or was a state or local public safety employee killed in the line of duty; or a POW on or after 1/1/60 as a result of Vietnam and was a MD resident. The surviving spouse of any state or local public safety employee is also eligible, provided he or she does not remarry.

BENEFITS: Students applying for renewal rewards are given first priority. The amount must be used for tuition and mandatory fees at any eligible institution, but may not exceed the equivalent resident undergraduate annual tuition and mandatory fees of the University of Maryland, College Park.

North Carolina

North Carolina has not paid a bonus to the veterans of any war. Instead, the state provides an extensive program of scholarships for qualifying children of certain categories of deceased, disabled or POW/MIA veterans.

 

1.Class I-A

 

Veteran parent killed or dies in wartime service or dies as a result of service-connected condition incurred in wartime service as defined in the law. No limit on number awarded each year. Duration of the scholarship is four academic years (8 semesters or 12 quarters) if used within 10 years.

Nature of scholarship: 

  • Free tuition, a room allowance, a board allowance, and exemption from certain mandatory fees as set forth in the law in public, community and technical colleges/institutions. 
  • $4,500 per nine month academic year in private colleges and junior colleges.

2.Class I-B

 

Veteran parent rated by USDVA as 100 percent disabled due to wartime service as defined in the law, and currently or at time of death drawing compensation for such disability. No limit on number awarded each year. Duration of the scholarship is four academic years (8 semesters or 12 quarters) if used within 10 years.

Nature of scholarship: 

  • Free tuition and exemption from certain mandatory fees as set forth in the law in public, community and technical colleges/institutions. 
  • $1,500 per nine month academic year in private colleges and junior colleges.

3.Class II

Veteran parent rated by USDVA as much as 20 percent but less than 100 percent disabled due to wartime service as defined in the law, or a statutory award for arrested pulmonary tuberculosis and currently or at time of death drawing compensation. 100 awarded per year. Duration of the scholarship is four academic years (8 semesters or 12 quarters) if used within 10 years.

Nature of scholarship: 

  • Free tuition, a room allowance, a board allowance, and exemption from certain mandatory fees as set forth in the law in public, community and technical colleges/institutions. 
  • $4,500 per nine month academic year in private colleges and junior colleges.
 

4.Class III

 

Veteran parent is or was at time of death drawing pension for total and permanent disability as rated by the USDVA, or Veteran parent is a deceased war veteran who has honorably discharged and who does not qualify under any other provision within this synopsis, provided such child is less than 23 years of age at the time of application for such scholarship. 100 awarded per year. Duration of the scholarship is four academic years (8 semesters or 12 quarters) if used within 10 years.

  • Free tuition, a room allowance, a board allowance, and exemption from certain mandatory fees as set forth in the law in public, community and technical colleges/institutions. 
  • $4,500 per nine month academic year in private colleges and junior colleges.

5.Class IV

Veteran parent was a prisoner of war or missing in action. No limit on number awarded per year. Duration of the scholarship is four academic years (8 semesters or 12 quarters) if used within 10 years.

 

Nature of scholarship: 

  • Free tuition, a room allowance, a board allowance, and exemption from certain mandatory fees as set forth in the law in public, community and technical colleges/institutions. 
  • $4,500 per nine month academic year in private colleges and junior colleges.

South Carolina

FREE TUITION FOR CERTAIN VETERANS' CHILDREN:

This state benefit is for children of certain war veterans attending SC state-supported colleges and universities as well as state-supported post-high school technical education institutions. Virginia

The Virginia War Orphans Education Program

ELIGIBILITY:
The Virginia War Orphans Education Program provides educational assistance for children, or surviving children, of certain veterans. To be eligible for assistance under this program, an applicant must meet the following basic eligibility requirements.

MILITARY SERVICE & DISABILITY REQUIREMENTS

One of the applicant’s parents must have served in the armed forces of the United States; and must be permanently and totally disabled due to war or other armed conflict; or

One of the applicant’s parents must have died as a result of war or other armed conflict; or

One of the applicant’s parents must be listed as a prisoner of war (POW) or missing in action (MIA).

VIRGINIA RESIDENCY REQUIREMENTS

The applicant’s parent, on which eligibility is based, must have been a resident of the Commonwealth of Virginia at the time of entry into active military service; or

The applicant’s parent, on which eligibility is based, must have been a resident of the Commonwealth of Virginia for at least five (5) consecutive years immediately prior to the date of application or death; or

The surviving parent must have been a citizen of Virginia for at least five (5) years prior to marrying the deceased parent, or must have been a citizen of Virginia for at least five (5) consecutive years immediately prior to the date on which application was submitted by or on behalf of such child for admission to any educational or training institution in this Commonwealth.

OTHER REQUIREMENTS

  1. The applicant must be no less than sixteen (16) years of age, and no more than twenty-five (25) years of age.
  2. The applicant must use this entitlement to attend either a Virginia state supported secondary or post-secondary educational institution.
  3. Eligible individuals are entitled to a maximum of forty-eight (48) months of tuition-free education and required fees at any Virginia state supported secondary or post-secondary educational institution.
  4. Individuals entitled to this benefit may use it to pursue any vocational, technical, undergraduate or graduate program of instruction. Generally, programs listed in the academic catalogs of institutions are acceptable, provided they have a clearly defined educational objective, i.e., certificate, diploma, or degreeBENEFITS:

West Virginia

Dependents of Deceased Veterans Tuition Waiver

ELIGIBILITY:
Children (age 16-23) one year WV residence, orphaned child who's veteran parent was killed during hostile actions.

BENEFITS: Free tuition at state supported institutions of higher education, plus a maximum of $500 for fees, board, room, books and supplies and other expenses.

Note: All applications must be approved by the Advisory Committee of War Orphans Education Program. This committee meets only twice per year as follows: The third Monday in July to consider application for the fall semester. The first Monday in December to consider applications for the spring semester. All application must be received at least five days prior to committee meetings. Late applications will not be considered.
