
Remission of Fees (Free Tuition) for the Child(ren) of a Disabled Veteran
The natural or legally adopted child(ren) of a disabled veteran may be eligible for remission of fees (free tuition) at any state-supported post secondary school or university in the State of Indiana. This applies at any age as long as the child was adopted by age 24 and the child is a resident of Indiana.The Remission of Fees is good for 124 semester hours of education and may be used for either undergraduate or graduate level work. The amount remitted is 100% of tuition and all mandatory fees. The term "mandatory fees" is defined as any fee that must be paid by every student attending the institution.
Eligible war time dates are:
- WW I: April 6, 1917 and November 11, 1918
- WWII: December 7, 1941 and December 31, 1946
- Korea: June 27, 1950 and Jan 31, 1955
- Vietnam: Aug 5, 1964 and May 7, 1975
- Gulf War: August 2, 1990 – present
Eligibility Rules for Remission of Fees
The veteran must have served on active duty in the U.S. Armed Forces during a period of wartime, and must have been a resident of the State of Indiana (filed state income taxes) for not less than 36 consecutive months during his/her lifetime.
And:
The veteran must be declared to be service-connected disabled with a rating of 0% or greater (as of July 1 2005) by the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs, or the Department of Defense (if the Department of Defense, the veteran must supply official documentation).
Or:
The veteran received a Purple Heart Medal.(Official documentation of the award is required.)
Or:
The veteran was a resident of Indiana at the time of entry into the service and was declared a POW or MIA after January 1, 1960.
Or:
The student was a veteran-related pupil at the Indiana Soldiers' and Sailors' Children's Home.

Veteran Dependent Tuition Waiver
ELIGIBILITY:Children (must be biological or adopted); (stepchildren not eligible); orphan, spouse, or non-remarried widow of a permanently and totally disabled war veteran or State National Guardsmen killed while on active duty for training (member must have served during official periods of federally recognized hostilities). Children must be between the ages of 17-23 (no age restrictions for spouses) who are accepted for enrollment by state-supported institutions of higher learning (state vocational schools are also acceptable).
Veteran must be a resident, or if deceased, must have been a legal KY resident at the time of death. A living veteran must be officially rated as being 100% disabled by a state or federal agency, or if deceased, held such rating at the time of death; or certification of 100% permanent and total disability by state licensed physician in lieu of required documentation, subject to restrictions.
BENEFITS:Waiver of tuition fees for 36 months of schooling, until one degree is achieved or until age 23, whichever occurs first. Age restriction does not apply to spouse.

Dependent Tuition Assistance
ELIGIBILITY:The Children of Veterans Tuition Grant Act is designed to provide undergraduate tuition assistance to certain children older than 16 and less than 26 years of age who have been Michigan residents for the 12 months prior to application. To be eligible a student must be the natural or adopted child of a Michigan veteran.The veteran must:
- Have been killed in action or died from another cause while serving in a war or war condition in which the United States of America was or is participating; or,
- Have died or become totally and permanently disabled as a result of a service-connected illness or injury as determined by the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs; or,
- Have been totally and permanently disabled as a result of a service-connected illness or injury prior to death and has now died; or,
- Be listed as MIA (missing in action) in a foreign country as determined by the U.S. government.Student eligibility requirements include:
- Enrolled at least half time at a Michigan community college, public university or non-profit independent, degree-granting college or university
- Michigan resident for one year prior to program application
- U.S. citizenship or permanent resident
- Maintained a cumulative grade point average of 2.25 in any postsecondary classes completed at any eligible institution in any previous academic years
- Not have been convicted of a felony involving an assault, physical injury, or death
BENEFITS:Full-time students can receive up to a maximum of $2,800 per academic year.

MIA/POW Orphans Scholarship:
Eligibility: Applicants must be between the age of 16-21; attending OH public assisted institutions of higher education, eligible non-profit private institution of higher education or proprietary school, OH resident for 12 months prior to application or, if parent does not meet residence requirements, five years prior to application.
Benefits: Payment of instructional and general fees and reasonable and necessary expenses for room and board, books and lab feess to maximum of four academic years of undergraduate education.

War Orphans Scholarship:
Eligibility: Applicants must be between 16-21; must be OH resident for one year preceding date of award, must have recommendation from high school principal. Must attend eligible OH institution of higher education. Veteran parent(s) must have served in the U.S. Armed Forces for 90 days or more during period of war, have died or have been discharged with at least 60% disability or a 100% non-service-connected disability. Children of persons listed as POW or MIA while serving in Southeast Asia 8/5/64 and 5/7/75, also eligible. The Ohio War Orphans Scholarship Board determines the number of awards and applicant eligibility.
Benefits: Support amount per award: Scholarships are for general and instructional fees. Students attending OH non-profit institutions of higher education and proprietary schools will receive amounts no greater than average amount paid for students attening public institutions.

The Ohio National Guard Tuition Grant:
Eligibility: The only individuals eligible for this program are OH residents who have a high school diploma or GED certificate and who enlist, re-enlist, or extend their current enlistment for six years of Selective Reserve duty in the ONG.
Benefits: The ONG grant will cover 60% of the total tuition and general fee charges of state assisted colleges and universities in pursuit of an undergraduate degree. The Grant is limited to 12 quarters or 8 semesters and participants must remain enrolled as full time undergraduate student maintaining 12 credit hours or more per term.
Application: Ohio National Guard Scholarship Program: The ONGSP will pay 100% of the tuition charges of state-assisted colleges and universities. For approved private or proprietary degree-granting institutions of higher education, the program will pay 100% of the average tuition charges of all state universities (see list enclosed at Appendix B). ONGSP is not available for courses not applicable to or leading to an Associate or Baccalaureate degree.
