Over the last few decades, more and more adults have returned to college to further their education. In recent years, adults age 25 and older have accounted for more than 35 percent of the 17.6 million students enrolled in U.S. institutions of higher learning. The number one question on everyone's mind is "Why are so many adults returning to college?" Because, education pays.

Research shows that the more education you receive in your lifetime, the greater your earning potential becomes. In addition, you will also lower your unemployment risk and increase your opportunity for career advancement.

By obtaining a bachelor's degree or higher in your field you could potentially:

  • Earn two-thirds more money than a person with only some high school education. Statistics show that a degree holder typically makes more money because companies are willing to pay more to have college graduates work for them (Bureau of Labor Statistics).
  • Face one-half as much unemployment risk, as a person with only some high school education. Studies completed by the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) show an increased demand for college graduates and predict that over the next ten years, more than 14 million job openings will be filled by workers who have a bachelor's degree or higher.
  • Increase your opportunity for career advancement. Earning a degree may help you get promoted in your current job or get you a new job. Employers often feel that college graduates are more motivated, learn tasks more quickly, are better able to meet deadlines and have better problem solving and communication skills.

Now, you are probably wondering, "How am I going to fit classes in with my busy schedule?" It may seem that you will have to sacrifice time with family and friends and other commitments to earn your degree, but with many online learning programs, you can study when and where it is convenient for you — on your lunch break, in the morning or after the kids go to bed.

Returning to college as a working adult isn't easy, but more than 6.7 million adults think that a college degree is worth it. Shouldn't you?
